COURSE D

In Course D, the corps cadets will be covering the themes of Ethics, Purity & Sex, Justice, and Tolerance. While several of these themes are woven into all lessons throughout the five years of Corps Cadets, we will take a more direct approach in teaching on these concepts in this course.

The Ethics lessons help corps cadets to define the term, as well as to understand values, morals, and character. They will look at the Junior Soldier Promise and A Soldier’s Covenant, learning the ethical side of making a promise or covenant. They will discuss dilemmas and how to make biblically ethical decisions. Finally, they will look at virtues and how to build Christlike character.

The Purity and Sex lessons will help corps cadets understanding the biblical meaning of purity and how to create healthy boundaries, particularly regarding sex. They will learn about the issue of human trafficking and what they can do to help fight this evil. As they study the life of David, they will see that past choices can be redeemed and learn the difference between lust and love. And they will learn about God’s design for sex.

The Justice lessons teach corps cadets that God is a God of justice. They will learn about tightfisted versus openhanded giving and what that has to do with justice as the learn about the Good Samaritan. They will be introduced to The Salvation Army’s role in advocating justice both in the past and the present. Corps cadets will learn that justice and fairness are not the same thing as well as how to practice justice. Finally, they will learn what it means to live justly as they learn about several current issues of injustice around the world and what they can do about it.

The Tolerance lessons help corps cadets to see the difference between respect and acceptance as they unpack the issue of judging others. As they consider the incident of Jesus flipping tables at the Temple, they will see His example of what it means to live out biblical tolerance. They will also be introduced to The Salvation Army’s Revolution Hawaii ministry and the International Social Justice Commission’s internship program as well as learn about how to share their testimony. And they will look at what it means to stand for truth, while at the same time, loving like Jesus.
